Chiropractic and Pregnancy
Pregnancy is extremely hard on the female body, putting it in a constant state of flux in which the body needs to consistently adapt. A common symptom of pregnancy is body pain in a variety of areas, but this can be easily explained. The hormone relaxin is released during pregnancy and it allows for ligaments to stretch and relax. This increase in ligament laxity permits the spine and pelvis to shift to accommodate baby. While this is a necessary process, ligaments hold the joints together and this increased laxity causes the spine to go out of alignment.
Webster Technique is a Chiropractic technique that focuses on the pregnant mother and it has multiple effects on mom and baby. Webster Technique has been shown to have the following benefits:
- Maintaining a healthier pregnancy
- Controlling symptoms of nausea
- Reducing the time of labor and delivery
- Relieving back, neck or joint pain
- Preventing a potential cesarean delivery
Establishing pelvic balance and alignment is a crucial reason to obtain Chiropractic Care during pregnancy. When the pelvis is misaligned it may reduce the amount of room available for the developing baby. A misaligned pelvis may also make it difficult for the baby to get into the best possible position for delivery. This can affect the mother’s ability to have a natural, non-invasive birth. Breech and posterior positions can interfere with the natural ease of labor and lead to interventions such as c-sections.
Currently, the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA) recommends women receive chiropractic care throughout pregnancy to establish pelvic balance and optimize the room a baby has for development throughout pregnancy.
